Assisting a Jazz Drumming Legend
Butch Miles is one of the foremost jazz drummers alive today. As a performer having toured the world, he has played with many of the greatest bandleaders and acts, including Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, and numerous others in studios and concert halls, at festivals, and in university settings. Mr. Miles can be heard on over 100 recordings, three of which have been Grammy winners. Additionally, he has been seen on television (The Tonight Show, The Dick Cavett Show, and more) and in movies. Beyond performing, Butch Miles is an active educator, traveling the world to teach clinics and masterclasses, and is on faculty at Texas State University, San Marcos.
In 2014, Mr. Miles was diagnosed with a life-threatening lung disease and needed a transplant, which required him to relocate to a different city for six months in order to be near his transplant center. At that time, Musicians Foundation stepped in and assisted with rental costs while Mr. Miles was receiving treatment. Recently, Butch Miles needed further assistance paying for expensive hearing aids to continue his work performing and teaching. Musicians Foundation supported him a second time so he could further his artistic pursuits.
Musicians Foundation was a God send providing me with enough funds to cover a great deal of the cost of the rental apartment we were able to get… Once again Musicians Foundation is allotting funds to help me pay for hearing aids. I am a musician and a teacher [and] I rely on my ears a great deal. This purchase will enable me to continue playing and teaching for, I pray, many years to come.
