Established by "The Bohemians" in 1914
(New York Musicians Club)
MUSICIANS FOUNDATION, INC. the philanthropic auxiliary of "The Bohemians" has carried out its charter purposes of May, 1914 for 79 years: to foster the interests and advance the conditions and social welfare of professional musicians and their families in case of need.
Since its establishment it has rejoiced in the support of "The Bohemians" and of loyal friends. We have seen the growth of its endowment through generous bequests from such 'Bohemians" as Clyde Burrows (Executive Director of the Foundation until 1969) & his wife, Mary; Sam Morgenstern, whose large bequest included continuing royalties from his books; and from Lewis Gensler's composition royalties. Another bequest came from Noel Haskins Murphy, a remarkable cultural presence in Paris between World Wars I and II. We also have received a most generous grant from the Helen Huntington Hull Fund and a major capital gift from Vladimir and Wanda Horowitz.
In Memoriam funds have been established to honor Olin Downes, Fritz Kreisler, Bottfried Galston, Isidor Philipp, Yolanda Mero-Irion, Theodore Steinway and Ernest Schelling. Through the generosity of Walter Toscanini, we have received LP recordings mastered from Arturo Toscanini's private collection and prepared especially for us as a fund-raising device. We received other special LP recordings by Isaac Stern and Alexander Schneider with Pablo Casals: Prades revisited 1950 / Casals retrospective 1915.
As the first woman on the Musicians Foundation Board, and having been privileged to become a member of "The Bohemians" in the 1970's, it has been my fervent desire to carry forward the selfless and deeply moving goals of our founders.
